Life Experience

Had an interesting conversation with a Gen Y today, he had just come back from 2.5 years experience living and working overseas. An incredible experience to say the least! So the next question was about choosing the next career path.

It can be daunting when you have been out of circulation from the main workforce, that when you return you feel like you need to carefully chose your next step. Nowadays life experience counts for so much more as this allows you to demonstrate skills like:

  • Flexibility

  • Patience

  • Tolerance

  • Willingness to discover

  • Cultural diversity.

Being able to relate to people is a sought after skill in whatever domain, so place your life experience on your resume it shows character and that you have gained valuable transferable skills. These are applied in the work place.

And getting back to the question about the next career choice, well go with what you are interested in, if you need to build up your cash reserves and need something short term, then do that for a while, you are getting back into a routine and then after awhile re-assess. Plan for the next job move, or think about re-training if you need to.

One step at a time..

I agree, when I worked in the corporate world and potential employers saw "gaps" in my resume', it was difficult to convey the practical skills I developed through travelling and working for myself. You should definitely in some way include certain non "hard skills" and experience on a resume'.
